{"id":5381,"date":"2023-08-01T13:57:21","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T13:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theatre.local\/be-part-symposium\/"},"modified":"2023-08-01T13:57:21","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T13:57:21","slug":"be-part-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theatre.kondrats.dev\/lv\/be-part-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Art Beyond Participation &#8211; BE PART Symposium as a part of the 2023 Homo Novus festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After four years of exploring the ethics of artistic participation, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partners, artists, community members and audiences will gather in Riga for a final Symposium. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a project initiated by a network of 10 EU and non-EU partners that critically explores the politics and practices of participation in the arts field. From collaborative art-making and sharing to decentralised governance models involving local citizens, artists and policy makers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Symposium aims to highlight projects from around the network, invite provocations from the participants and provides further inspiration to dive deeper into an ethical framework of co-authorship. Collectively for three days we will listen, talk, discuss, watch, participate, dance, sing and toast to the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Festival of Contemporary Theatre <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homo Novus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LV) is joined in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 by our collaborators: Santarcangelo dei Teatri (Santarcangelo, Italy), Artsadmin (London, UK), Scottish Sculpture Workshop (Lumsden, UK) VIERNULVIER (Gent, Belgium) URB festival (Helsinki, Finland) Festival de Marseille (Marseille, France) City of Women (Ljubljana, Slovenia) L\u2019Art Rue (Tunis, Tunisia) Cork Midsummer Festival (Cork, IE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All events are <\/span><b>FREE <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and hosted at the <\/span><b>Homo Novus Festival Centre, <\/b><b>Ka\u013c\u0137u iela 24, Riga<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Wednesday 06.09.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>14:00<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feel for the Game<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Keynote by Darren O\u2019Donnel (CA), artistic director of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mammalian Diving Reflex<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Strategies for co-authoring the cultural sector with young people who couldn\u2019t really give two shits about the cultural sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>16:00 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Panel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes from the Future<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shake Down<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> curators Ikars Gra\u017edanovi\u010ds, Karu Treij, Samuels Ozoli\u0146\u0161 (LV) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiasma <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young curator Alex Mitiku (FI). In the last two years, several different projects within the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> network have given context, power and artistic freedom to young people. However, were the right frames in place to achieve true artistic freedom?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>17:30 <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong Families<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Festival School debrief. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gob Squad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GB\/DE) will run a 6-day workshop, sharing different strategies for co-creation, all framed by the concept of \u2018wrong families\u2019 and notions of collectivity. All Welcome!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>21:00 <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ATLAS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Publication Party. A small delegation of artistic and social laboratory <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ATLAS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BE) will come to Riga for their official presentation and they need your help!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thursday, 07.09.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>10:00<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kubakiya kile tuko (Remain What We Are)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Keynote by Joseph Kasau (CG), visual artist, filmmaker and author based in Lubumbashi. Joseph will introduce his practice through his collaboration on the\u00a0 films <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ulemu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Return<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an epic journey by Rita Mukebo. The discussion will propose a lens in which to understand art as essentially functional, representing celebrations and rituals within communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>11:30<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Second Panel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community and identity <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by artist duo Barbara Lehtna (EE\/LV) and Katr\u012bna D\u016bka (LV). The artists will share their experience on working with identity-based communities in their piece <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Name of Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2021) which was created with 8 local queer people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>14:00 <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book of Riga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Andy Field, Beckie Darlington (GB). A live book launch where the book\u2019s young authors will present their prospects for the city to the Riga City Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>16:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Critical Network \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Protocol Presentation. The critical network will organise different meetings during the Riga assembly that will be centered around the building of toolboxes departing from the protocol. We will start by reflecting on the whole protocol process, its usefulness, necessity and efficiency for the different participants and organisations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>17:30 <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong Families<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Festival School debrief. (See above)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>19:00<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Film Beyond Participatio<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n \u2013 A glimpse into the fieldworks from beyond. The Screening program invites a gaze into the process and the outcomes of many collaborations from across the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> network. We dance in Tunis, Sing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ode to Joy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (through the unique perspective of Deaf culture) and meet young traveler artists. After the screening there will be a short Q&amp;A with the artists present at the Symposium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>21:00<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be water, my friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a performative dance by Mara Oscar Cassiani (IT) made to unify the people as a transgenerational open ritual, inspired by Bruce Lee&#8217;s \u201chomonymous\u201d monologue. We will be water, we will be the river, we will be the same dance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Friday, 08.09.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>10:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Artist Workshop <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erased Gazes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by artistic collective of the Politics of Touch. In 1992, soon after Slovenia broke away from Yugoslavia, the administrative bodies of the Republic of Slovenia arbitrarily and illegally erased more than 25,000 people from the register of permanent residents. To protest the injustices caused by the Erasure, the Artistic collective of the Politics of Touch project created the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erased Gazes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> memorial canvas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>14:00 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Panel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community as Locality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 heading towards the more than human. This panel will explore the techniques of collaborating with non-humans and the humans that interact with the landscapes that also contribute to the complex make up of the locality. Panel features: One step at a time like this (AU), Vinny Jones (NL), Zoe Palmer (UK) and Linda Krumina (LV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>15:30 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workshop <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond Participation?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Reflecting on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BE PART<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sophie Hope and Henry Mulhall (GB) will present their research methodology inviting participants to reflect on the changing meanings, understandings, motivations and experiences of participation, power-sharing, co-creation and collaboration, asking the audience to play a game to explore what lies beyond, and behind their own experiences of participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>17:30 <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong Families<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Festival School debrief.
