{"id":5731,"date":"2021-06-28T11:51:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T11:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theatre.local\/magic-carpets-laboratories-for-artists-working-with-communities\/"},"modified":"2021-06-28T11:51:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T11:51:14","slug":"magic-carpets-laboratories-for-artists-working-with-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theatre.kondrats.dev\/lv\/magic-carpets-laboratories-for-artists-working-with-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cMagic Carpets\u201d laboratories for artists working with communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><b>In the final year of the <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/magiccarpets.eu\/\"><b>\u201cMagic Carpets\u201d<\/b><\/a><b> platform, from 3 to 17 June, the New Theatre Institute of Latvia (NTIL) implemented a co-creation laboratory, providing six young artists from Latvia with an in-depth understanding of topics in creative research series in collaboration with communities and \/ or \u201ceveryday experts\u201d \/ non-professionals.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In three different laboratories, working practically and inspired by previously created works of artists, work with communities was viewed from different perspectives: the needs of artists and communities, the daily trajectories of the community and the group hierarchy. Ways to make the process of creating works of art transparent, to understand the comfort zones of artists and the community and various conflicts were explored. The young artists were introduced to gaining individual experience stories in a mutually designed and safe environment, the importance of the form of co-creation, getting to know the community representatives before and after the project, conceptualizing and planning projects, also learning about examples of international projects and their methodology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In June 2021, six young theatre makers participated in the laboratory cycle and did an individual research organized by the <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/magiccarpets.eu\/\"><b>\u201cMagic Carpets\u201d<\/b><\/a><b> platform, including various experiences and interests:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Contemporary dance artist <b>Agate Bankava<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is interested in collaborating in-depth with young people, exploring their relationship with the city and themselves in a specific place, emphasizing young people&#8217;s thoughts, dreams and future plans;<br \/>\n\u2013 dramaturgy student <b>Di\u0101na Kondra\u0161a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 she creates works in the aesthetics of documentary theatre with a deep interest and currently wants to cooperate with a representative of the Roma community;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 artist and curator <b>Ieva Saul\u012bte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the laboratory focused on conversations and research related to the elderly;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 theatre director <b>M\u0101ra Ga\u0146\u0123e<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wants to continue working with topics that have been of interest to her for a long time \u2013 the perception of the world and art by blind and partially sighted people and their current place in our society;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 theatre director <b>Antra Leite&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deeply personal interest is in working with women who became mothers in 2020;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 for theatre artist and playwright <b>Katr\u012bna D\u016bka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the main research area is LGBTQ+ community and cooperation with representatives of this community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The laboratory cycle was led and artists that shared their experience:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Krista Bur\u0101ne, a documentary theatre and film director, playwright and author of interdisciplinary projects, who has implemented more than 20 art projects centered on the &#8216;everyday person&#8217; various communities or &#8216;a very important and topical topic in society&#8217;;<br \/>\n\u2013 dramaturg, playwright, theatre artist and lecturer J\u0101nis Balodis, who is a graduate of the DAS Theater master&#8217;s program in the Netherlands. Since 2011, Balodis has been the author and co-author of 17 performing arts projects focusing on documentary theatre and community work;<br \/>\n\u2013 in the laboratory, <a href=\"http:\/\/magiccarpets.eu\/\"><b>\u201cMagic Carpets\u201d<\/b><\/a><b> residency participants and project implementers shared their experience in working with communities in 2019 and 2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><b>Ahilan Ratnamohan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Tamil-born director and choreographer who grew up in Australia, played professional football in the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden, but since 2007 deals with contemporary art in collaboration with non-actors;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 artists <b>Laura Sta\u0161\u0101ne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Jana Jacuka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who in 2020 researched and looked for ways to talk about domestic violence in public. The result was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/2020.homonovus.lv\/homonovus.lv\/eng\/programme973e.html?s=Museum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a work in which the artists worked closely with women who had been victims of domestic or domestic violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 creative team \u2013 curator <b>Alberto di Gennaro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, non-formal education practitioner <\/span><b>Lauma<\/b> <b>\u017dubule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dance playwright <\/span><b>Linda Kr\u016bmi\u0146a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the NTIL&#8217;s creative producer <\/span><b>Sandra Lapkovska<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 who, in cooperation with 10 young people from C\u0113sis Educational Institution for Minors, created the project <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/2020.homonovus.lv\/homonovus.lv\/eng\/programme7ed1.html?s=Svidanka\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSvidanka\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 curators <b>Greta Klimavi\u010di\u016bt\u0117-Mink\u0161timien\u0117<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Neringa Kulik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in collaboration with contemporary dance choreographers and dancers <\/span><b>Mantas Staba\u010dinskas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Marius Pingis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, using practical examples and assigning tasks, shared experience gained both in implementing and managing the 15 partner countries&#8217; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/magiccarpets.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMagic Carpets\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform, which were implemented by artists collaborating with local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the laboratories, one of the starting points for creating new stories and getting to know different communities was gaining knowledge about the environment, the city and the region. By getting to know the environment and the people who live in it on a daily basis with their stories, experiences and views, artists, in the course of negotiations and research, tried to highlight issues that are relevant to specific communities. One of the main issues of the laboratory was the artists&#8217; efforts to understand their own and society&#8217;s attitude towards different communities, looking for how, why and where different questions and stereotypes about the particular community and its representatives arise..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the laboratories was to establish negotiations and creative cooperation between artists and selected communities, so that at the end of the laboratory cycle, it would be possible to take the next steps in the development of ideas and new and innovative works.
